I have always considered him to be the Yoda of Shakespeare.

 Robbie Taylor

I learned so much from you, not just from your teachings and your example -- but if it weren't for the spark you lit up in me for Shakespeare I never would have found all the lessons hiding in there. The chance you gave me at your theater launched me into a decade-long career that gave me my family. Thank you.

See you on the other side.

John was an incredible acting teacher. I feel blessed to have been his colleague at MMC for so many years. He made his students feel joyous in his acting classes – all the time. That is so rare in this study and near impossible to achieve, yet he did it, day in and day out. Students spoke of their experiences in his classes with love and affection for John, and for the work he inspired.  I learned so much from John's insights into Shakespeare and the plays and his great excitement sharing ideas on how to make the language live. He offered a gift to others in how he shared his knowledge, and he was a gift to us in our lives. And he was just such a nice guy! He will be missed.

Scholarships will be awarded to Theatre Arts students in need of financial assistance.

John had a strong motivation to help those who were struggling,” [his wife] Liz Keefe said. “He was always thinking about ways to expand his toolbox to help students.”

Though the next generation of aspiring actors won’t be able to experience Professor Basil’s classes or work with him on stage, they will benefit from his legacy of kindness and deep commitment to students.

Keefe recently established the John Basil Memorial Scholarship in his name, with the first awards set to be made to MMC Theatre majors this year.

“John would be so proud and happy to know that even after death he was still nurturing students and giving them an opportunity to succeed, particularly those who might be experiencing financial hardship,” Keefe said. “It is my desire to continue his legacy, and this is the highest form in my mind of honoring him.”
